Voigts Family Camping

The 2nd annual Voigts family camping trip was a success. We stayed at Crazy Horse Campground in Brodhead, WI. We ate great food, rode bikes, tubed/kayaked,went fishing, and made s’mores. We also had a lot to celebrate this past weekend. June birthdays: Bea, me, Tom. Father’s Day: Tom, Alex, Adam. We enjoyed our time together…below is the picture proof!

Colorado - Part 2

We arrived at Estes Park on Friday late afternoon and were immediately greeted by this huge fella munching on the side of the road. It wouldn't be the only time during the trip that I asked Alex to keep his eyes on the road.

We stayed at the Estes Park Campground at Marys Lake. We were immediately impressed with the campground, based on it's location/proximity to the Beavers meadow entrance station to RMNP. However, we decided against going in the national park on Saturday, as it was not only the weekend, but the weekend of the Memorial Day holiday. And the weather was fantastic, so we figured it would be packed. Plus we had the rest of the week to make sure we saw/did all the things we wanted to.

So instead we spent the morning at Hermit Park open space, doing what else… biking! Alex and Liam rode Limber Pine while the rest of us waited (and rode the last little section of the trail, over and over).

We then drove back south to Boulder and enjoyed lunch from Lindsay's Deli on the Pearl Street Mall, which is actually a street thru Boulder that is closed to traffic and you can just stroll and shop. And boy were there a lot of people stalling and shopping! After checking out the awesome University Bike shop, we drove a few minutes across town to Valmont Bike Park. This was by far one of our favorite stops of the whole trip. So many reasons; different jump lines, a cute little pump track for Gavin, some beginner mountain bike trails with (beginner) features. I impressed the kids (and myself) by doing a couple of the drops, a skinny and the teeter-totter (and by knowing the names of all of these things!). The highlight though had to be the fateful run-in with a distant friend/former colleague, who I had not seen since 2004! She and her husband moved to Salt Lake City, from the Chicago suburbs way back when and by a crazy twist of fate ended up at the very same bike park, on the very same hill where I was watching Gavin. I made a joke to (what I thought were) the strangers standing next to me about how Gavin had been going in the same circle for at least 3 hours and as we all laughed it occurred to me....I KNOW this woman! Of course I was thrilled to meet their 10 year old son-who had as much love for mountain bikes as our boys-and as they immediately headed off to ride together, I spent the next hour-ish catching up on the last almost 20 years with my long lost friend. We reminisced on how we helped each other thru the difficult times at that job we shared, and how we had been doing since. And while I was sad to say goodbye again, I am so happy for her, for her beautiful family and the beautiful life she is living (now in CO, instead of UT). Who knows, maybe in another 20 our paths will randomly cross again.

Sunday rolled around and we decided to try our luck in RMNP. The weather seemed like it might hold us back a bit, so we didn't want to skip another day with fears of crowds. We lucked out and the entrance lines were short (about 5 cars in each of 3-4 lanes). We also lucked out b/c James was a 4th grader this past year and the national parks have a program called Every Kid Outdoors which gives them/their family free entry! I had also made timed entry reservations for the park as soon as they became available at the beginning of May. Without those reservations, you either have to enter prior to 9am or come in after 3pm.

We drove into Beaver meadows, then along Trail Ridge Rd to Old Fall River Rd over to Alluvian Fan. Afterwards we headed to Sheeps Lake, where we  saw a crowd gathering/cars pulling off, so we of course did the same. And were rewarded with a great view of a young bull moose!

We had missed the Bighorn sheep, who came down from the mountain earlier that morning, but the meadow was full of Elk resting.

On Monday we hiked around Lily Lake and checked out the Wild Basin hike to Copeland Falls. These are 2 areas of RMNP that are a bit off the beaten path. Wished we could have gone farther on our Wild Basin hike...but weather was not cooperating, nor was the 4 year old after about 1 mile in.

On Tuesday we woke up and had a family meeting. Our original plans were to stay until Friday and visit RMNP each day. We (read: I) had high hopes of Trail Ridge Rd opening (after the prior snowstorm from a couple weekends ago) but it had not yet done so... (sound familiar from our Pikes Peak plans?). Also,  Tuesday night was predicting another 8" of snow in the park. So we decided together to do as much as we could Tuesday morning, go downtown Estes for souvenirs and then head back East before the snow arrived. And so, we entered Bear lake Rd at about 9:30 and headed up to see if we would get lucky and find a parking spot at the trailhead lot to hike around Bear Lake. And the lot was full. And the park ranger at the entrance was turning cars away. But by some stroke of luck, when we pulled up, she waved us thru and said there is at least 1 spot, and we should take it. I 'm not sure she knows this but I love her. We had read that the Bear Lake trail was "accessible" and approx .5 miles around and probably the most popular "hike" in the park. It was a well traveled path but boy were we surprised to find a snow packed/icy trail. But that just make it all the more fun. And the scenery was spectacular. Just look at that reflection.

We then headed to Jr Ranger station so the boys could take their oath to protect RMNP.

When the ranger asked the boys what animals they had seen, I mentioned that we were disappointed to miss the Bighorn Sheep and she said, I just heard on the radio that they are over by Fall River. So of course, we had to hurry on over to give it a shot. And were well-rewarded.

Finally we headed out of RMNP, into downtown Estes Park to make our contribution to the town's economy, by purchasing all our swag!  We made it back to the campground to hook up and head out just as the nasty clouds were looming.  We did loose our $ for the extra nights we didn't stay in Estes, but I was able to move up our reservations in North Platte, NE and Gretna for the next 2 nights. We made a pit stop at the Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum (SAC) just before arriving at the KOA for our last night away from home. Anyplace with a SR-71A (aka Blackbird) is worth a stop in our books.

We arrive safely back home on Thursday evening. And I've been doing laundry ever since.

Until our next Adventure, love from,

The Triple V

Colorado - Part 1

Our 'big' vacation this year was to Colorado. We left on a Saturday morning and made our way to Iowa City, via the Quad cities where we stopped at Sunderbruch park to do a little bike ride.

Upon arrival in Iowa City we street-parked/camped in front of Alex's cousin's house. We enjoyed pizza and catching up! The next day we were awake early so we unloaded the bikes and were able to ride and check out some of the University campus, which we had mostly to ourselves, on an early Sunday morning, with school now out of session.  Some of you may know I am a University of Illinois alum, but I still enjoyed our tour of the Hawkeye stadium, downtown and quads.

Back on the road, we made our way to Gretna, NE where we stayed at a KOA (& would stay there again on the way home-which, oddly, makes that campground our most visited campground of all time!). The next day, Monday, was the longest travel day of our whole trip. But when we saw those mountains looming just past Denver, we were EXCITED. We pulled into the Garden of Gods RV Resort in the evening and prepared to spend 4 nights visiting the sights and biking the mountains of Colorado Springs. The weather was definitely chilly. The mid section of Colorado (including Colorado Springs, Denver and Estes) had just had a late spring snow storm the weekend before we arrived. So there was still snow on the peaks, but not at lower elevations. There was evidence though, as the trees which had already leafed had trouble bearing the weight of all that wet snow and there were branches down everywhere in town.

On Tuesday we visited the Garden of Gods. We started off on the Perkins central garden trail, which was the main "drag" but when we went up the Siamese twins trail, the kids really got to climb all over. It was awesome! We finish up at Balanced rock. We had some time to kill, so we took at unplanned trip to see the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. A bit of a tourist trap, but it did the job required (killed time) and then we headed over to Red Rock Canyon to do some bike riding in the evening. There was a couple of women hiking with a beautiful siberian husky dog...off leash. The dog seemed pretty well trained, however, it was running very far ahead of them. At one point we saw the dog take off up the mountain to chase deer. When we turned our bikes around to head back, the owners were still whistling for their dog. Sadly, we have our doubts they'll ever see it again.

On Wednesday we went to the Royal Gorge. This amazing suspension bridge was built in 1929 and remains America's highest bridge at 1053 feet above the Arkansas river. We rode the Gondola across one way and walked the bridge back. No one was willing to try the zip line.

We also got to ride bikes in the park area surrounding the gorge. After a picnic lunch Alex and Liam rode Twisted Cistern trail and then all of us rode the trail to Point Alta Vista which included the old trestles from a scenic miniature train that ran from 1957 to 2012 taking visitors to the gorge edge. Under new private ownership and in conjunction with local government and community organizations the trestles were restored and the trail was made accessible to the public opening in 2021. On that day, we had the trail all to ourselves!

On Thursday we hiked and rode bikes in North Cheyenne Canyon Park. We hiked to Helen Hunt Falls and Alex and Liam rode the Captain Jacks mountain bike trail.

At this point, we (read: I) had been hoping/checking all week for Pikes Peak Highway to open to the Summit but when it didn't seem it would, we decided we had better go as far as we could. So we drove over to the entrance station and made it at 3:50 just before the gates closed at 4. (probably b/c I insisted on ice cream at Josh&Johns after our hike/bike). The road was open to Devils playground, and it was cold up there, but the view was worth it!

On Friday we bid a fond farewell to Colorado Springs and headed north to Estes Park. We visited a cool bike shop called Bikesource in the suburbs of Denver, where we got Liam's bike a new tube and Gavin a new helmet. To try out the new gear, we first stopped at Bear Creek Lake Park and rode some trails. We then drove to Ruby Hill Bike Park in Denver.

Be sure to check out part 2 to hear about the rest of our adventure, which we spent in Estes and Rocky Mountain National Park. Pictures do NOT do it justice, but I will try my best...by including A LOT of them-like this!

Bentonville Take 2

We headed to Bentonville, AR again for Spring break 2022. We spent Frida night in Bloomington visiting my college friend and her son and then drove the rest of the way Saturday. We decided to make up for last time and get our wood fire pizza and Trash ice cream after we set up camp.

On Sunday we rode some new trails, which were just outside our campground in Bella Vista, the wonderland trails. We got to check out a new oz trails installation:

The boys then rode one of our good ol' favs: Leopards loop which they approached from Apple Creek and Tristan’s trail (to the Oz wall). Afterwards they check out Park springs park.

In the evening we went to Wolf pup park, and Gavin was able to ride his 2 wheeler this time (last year he used the balance bike).

On Monday, Alex and Liam rented Specialized Stump Jumpers from Gearhead bicycle shop . We all currently have hard tails and they wanted to check out full suspension. We went to Coler Mountain Preserve and spent time riding together and separately. Of course they loved the bikes, and have been negotiating ever since to purchase new bikes.

On Tuesday we rode through much of the Slaughter pen trail including All American, Catapult, and  Crystal bridges/art trail. We got to check out a few new/improved trails, where they are building what will be an awesome Castle themed Hub.
Alex was sick back at the camper so it was just me and the boys.

On Wednesday I went down for the count (caring is sharing), so Alex took the boys to Crystal bridges Museum for a lesson in art.

On Thursday we tried to visit one of our favorites from last time: Runway Bike Park, but the weather was not really cooperating. So we headed over to downtown Bentonville and walked thru the Walmart museum.

On Friday morning before heading out the weather was much nicer, but the trails were a little soft. We did any repeats that we could, including All American, black apple to leopards loop, masterpiece and schroenn train. Then we hitched our trailer and headed home.

We stayed in St. Louis for Friday and Sat night, because on Saturday we went to the City Museum. it was our second time (except Gavin-it was his first) and we always have an awesome time.

At this time, we have decided that we may make Bentonville an every other year destination. It really has something for all of us!
